Language, a potent instrument, determines our views, feelings and actions. It can be employed to establish an all-embracing office environment that empowers and includes every member notwithstanding their background or identity. In using respectful, inclusive and empowering language we are able to tear down walls and create a work place culture that promotes diversity, equity and inclusion.
The following are some practical ways of creating inclusive workplace cultures through language:
Avoid using language that is exclusive or biased towards certain groups of people. Rather use gender-neutral language that respects everyone such as they/them pronouns instead of assuming someone’s gender identity or chairperson instead of chairman/chairwoman.
Stereotypes are harmful because they instigate bias and discrimination. Do not use race-based, sex-based language for stereotypes suggest that an individual’s abilities or preferences are predictable from their racial background or gender among other characteristics. Instead focus on strengths inherent in individuals.
You must foster an environment where your workforce feels free to express themselves with their thoughts and ideas. Encourage open communication as well as active listening while avoiding the use of destructive languages.
These are subtle but unintentional forms of discrimination which inflict harm on victims’ egoism by discouraging them from doing things worth praising for others. Understand microaggressions within your speech and take corrective actions when necessary.
Employees should be trained about inclusive language implementation through resource available at the company’s end–e.g., guidelines to follow. That way employees will have a similar perception and commitment towards fostering an inclusive workplace through their talk.
Implementing these strategies will help you create a more diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace culture for all staff members. While it entails hard work alongside commitment it pays off in terms of increased productivity, motivation level, and higher retention rates among other benefits thereby enhancing employee engagement and creating a sense of belonging .
Keep in mind, everything is a language. Let’s make it happen, let’s start small by educating ourselves first and then moving on to the rest of the world, and together we can create an inclusive culture in our workplaces.
