What is Diversity, Equality and Inclusivity? DEI Explained

Diversity, inclusivity, equality, and DEI principles are all fundamental for the construction of respectful, innovative, and resistant communities. In the workplace, the classroom, or the community, these values continue to help make sure that every person, no matter who they are, where they come from, what they look like, or whom they love, has an equal chance to get ahead and be who they are.

Let’s parse each of those ideas, why it matters, and how it informs how we live and work.

What Is Diversity?

Diversity is the variety of differences in a particular setting. These variations may be:

  • Image race, ethnicity, and nationality
  • Sexual orientation and gender identity
  • Age, religion, and disability
  • Educational background, socioeconomic status, and life experiences

When we say diversity in the workplace, we mean having a team of people from different backgrounds who bring different perspectives, ideas, and talents to the team.

Why It Matters:

Diverse teams are more innovative and better at problem-solving. Studies have shown that companies with greater diversity outperform their less diverse/more male/more heteronormative counterparts in terms of both financial and cultural strengths. But the mere presence of diversity isn’t sufficient — the manner in which we interact with that diversity is just as crucial.

What Is Inclusivity?

Inclusion is the technique of making people feel valued, supported, and respected, and of enabling them to participate in their society to their fullest extent. It’s also not simply about who is at the table — it is about whether those people are being heard, seen, and empowered.
Inclusivity requires more than simply having a group of diverse people in a room. It’s giving everyone a voice and making sure they’re heard, thinking in. This means breaking down the walls that hold some back from participation, whether those walls are cultural, physical, or systemic.

Why It Matters:

Diversity and inclusivity have a positive and significant impact on morale, employee engagement, and retention. It fosters psychological safety — the sense that it’s safe to take risks, to bring one’s full voice and self to work, to share ideas, to work more closely and collaboratively.

What Is Equality?

Equality is treating everyone the same and doing the same for everyone. It is based on the principle that everyone should have equal access to resources and opportunities, irrespective of background or identity. It’s important, however, to distinguish equality from equity.

Equality has to do with sameness — giving everyone equal resources. Equity has to do with fairness — distributing resources according to individuals’ needs to create a level playing field.

Why It Matters:

Without equity, those under-represented groups, or those marginalised, might then be placed at a disadvantage simply because systemic barriers exist. Through processes such as hiring, promotion, and education, we can build a fairer and effective society.

What Do Diversity, Inclusivity, and Equality Have in Common?

These three are related to each other. Diversity gives us variety. Diversity is not valued and empowered when we promote a world where a mind is still considered dangerous. Equality does not mean equal success, but it forms the basis of fairness under which all people may flourish. Think of it like this:

Diversity invites us all to dance. Inclusivity means being invited to the dance. Equality ensures we all receive shoes that fit, allowing us to dance comfortably.

The DIE Principles in Practice

Organisations and individuals need to work actively to be as inclusive as possible. Here are some ways you can do that:

  • Adopt inclusive hiring practices to hire diverse candidates.
  • Train teams and leadership on bias.
  • Create DEI policy to set expectations and goals.
  • Honor diversity through activities, education, and open discussion.
  • Make sure that it’s accessible for everyone — including people with disabilities.
  • Practice active listening with employees or community members from underrepresented groups.

Towards a Better Future

It turns out championing diversity, inclusivity, and equality is not just the right thing to do; it’s a savvy business move. The bottom line is that when people are seen, heard, and appreciated, they are more effective as a team and contribute to a more innovative and dynamic way of working.

And as people, organisations and communities, we all have a part to play in protecting these principles in more than just policy: day-in, day-out.
