The Organisation

The Open University Students Association serves the interests of around 170,000 part-time and distance-learning students spread across the UK, continental Europe and beyond. Our role is to represent and support the interests of this vast and diverse community of students. The OU Students Association is an independent registered charity, governed by elected student leaders. Our team of vibrant, friendly and dedicated professional staff provide the vital support needed to deliver our ambitious strategy.


The Job 

The post holder will be part of a small, hard-working team providing high quality communications to the wider staff team and the Association’s volunteers. The role will involve scheduling social posts on the organisation’s various social media accounts and posting news stories as needed. No coding experience is required for this. You will also help facilitate the team’s shared communications planning tool, as well as the team’s shared mailbox.

Education, qualifications and training


  • Good general standard of education including CGSE/’O’ Level A*-C in English


Knowledge and experience


  • Experience in an office administration role
  • Experience of effectively managing a joint mailbox
  • Interest in social media and experience of using various platforms


Skills, capabilities and qualities


  • Excellent administrative and organisational skills
  • Excellent IT skills (Microsoft Office: Outlook, Word, and Excel)
  • Excellent liaison skills
  • Interest in exploring new digital tools and an ability to pick up new software easily
  • Attention to detail and excellent proof-reading skills




Knowledge and experience


  • Experience of working in a similar democratic or member-led organisation (e.g. student union, charity, public sector).
  • Experience of dealing with people from a range of backgrounds and needs
  • Experience of posting to social media in a professional capacity
  • Experience of resizing and making minor edits to images / Experience of using Canva to do so
  • Experience of publishing text and images on a website
  • Experience of using Notion
  • Experience of taking photos professionally an advantage.


Skills, capabilities and qualities


  • Excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise own workload and meet deadlines in a busy and rapidly changing environment.
