About Us:
Tearfund is a Christian charity which partners with churches in more than 50 of the world’s poorest countries. We tackle poverty and injustice through sustainable development, by responding to disasters and challenging injustice. We believe an end to extreme poverty is possible.
Thousands of people needlessly suffer and die every day because of poverty. But that’s not God’s plan for the world. And God is calling you – all of us – to reach out to people in greatest need. We partner with local churches and organisations who have a crucial role to play in the places worst affected by poverty.
D&I Statement:
We want Tearfund to be a place where everyone feels welcome, respected, valued, treated fairly and that they belong here. Our aim is to empower everyone who works for Tearfund to flourish and reach their god-given potential.
The Equality Act protects employees from discrimination, harassment and victimization because of religion or belief. However, the Act also contains special provisions which mean restrictions (or occupational requirements) can be applied to roles in organisations which have an ethos based on religion or belief.
Tearfund have a distinctively Christian ethos, our fundamental mission being to follow Jesus where the need is greatest. We do this by working in partnership with local churches and Christian partner organisations in the UK and overseas. We believe our work will not prosper unless we pray about it and treat it as part of our worship to God. Our work is also channeled through local Christian churches/organisations and is funded predominantly from the financial support of Christian churches and individuals with supporters asked to pray alongside us for the needs of those who are living in poverty.
In order to achieve our fundamental mission and to maintain our ethos, we are satisfied that it is vital that every member of staff is actively working in accordance with our Christian beliefs. We aspire to combine professional excellence with Christian faith and seek to work in line with biblical principles and teachings, asking God’s guidance through prayer in everything that we do.
It follows that essential aspects of our work for all staff are participation in and leadership of spiritual sessions of worship, prayer, bible study and reflection, both as a whole organisation and as part of every individual team. For example, all staff take part (contribute and lead) in spiritual sessions of prayer and biblical reflection within your group.
There are relatively few Christian employers in the UK when compared with employers who have no religious ethos at all. There are therefore relatively fewer opportunities for Christians to associate together in work and to worship together as part of their work.
Given the very limited number of Christian employers and the wide variety of other employment opportunities available which do not require adherence to a particular belief, we are satisfied that it is reasonable and appropriate for Tearfund to employ only committed Christians who can sign up to our statement of faith.
Tearfund's ability to employ those who share Christian beliefs lies at the heart of its purpose and mission statement, basis of faith, values statement and operating principles and, as indicated by this response, we are confident that our commitment to do this remains lawful.
